LISTENING TO NATURE TOOLKIT

Nature Governance in the Upper St. Lawrence and Adirondack Watersheds

What would happen...

...if White Pines, American Eels, and the St. Lawrence River were able to make decisions for a corporation?

What if Nature was on the board of directors?

What if businesses listened to the voice of ecosystems before making decisions that would impact them?

Talking Rivers is...

...currently working on creating a Listening to Nature Toolkit to help nonprofits, businesses, research institutions, and agencies “listen” to the voices of Nature. We want to help organizations across the Upper St. Lawrence River and Adirondack Watersheds act in the best interest of their other-than-human neighbors. Together we can meet Nature’s needs and respect the Rights of all.

Embarking on this journey, Talking Rivers is following in the footsteps of Lawyers for Nature, the Earth Law Center, and cultures around the world that have been listening to the voices of ecosystems for millennia. While specifically created for the watersheds we call home, the toolkit will help interested organizations act in a respectful way with all other-than-human beings, making sure these entities are considered in the decision-making process.

THE TOOLKIT LANGUAGE CAN BE...

Included in an organization’s bylaws.
Added to an organization's Moral Compass or Core Values Document.
Utilized to create an "voice of ecosystems" code of conduct.
Adapted to generate a set of best practices that “listens” to the interests and needs of an ecosystem.

VOICE OF NATURE CONVERSATIONS

Talking Rivers is hosting a series of three community conversations, in which we invite participants to discuss how we can all listen to the voices of Nature.

These open discussions will be centered around the questions: How can natural entities be part of the decision making process of businesses and organizations? How can we act reciprocally with the ecosystems that sustain us?

Two of the events will be virtual (click to register below) and there will be one in-person conversation that will take place on November 7th at 6:00 PM, at the Adirondack Writing Center, in Saranac Lake, NY.

The two virtual conversations till take place on ZOOM on the following dates:

October 16th @ 6:00 PM
October 30th @ 6:00 PM
