The Spirits of Nature

Minket Lepcha is an indigenous storyteller from Darjeeling, India. Since 2012, she engaged herself in documenting stories and folklore of Himalayan region. She led a team where 15 families belonging to separate Lepcha clan from Dzongu, Sikkim documented their Lepcha clan stories through grassroot comics which were drawn and produced by them. Having always been inspired by Lepcha folklore and believing that the ecological wisdom are hidden in these stories, she creates workshop to inspire, influence and educate young minds to connect and provide an experiential learning towards their surrounding rivers and mountains. She has been traveling narrating stories of river, seeds, birds, mystical creatures to school and college students across India and Nepal. She is an awardee of Young Green Filmmaker 2016 in Woodpecker International Film Festival for her film 'Voices of Teesta' which was funded by NWO Project. This film also earned 10th position amongst 110 films in World Water Forum in Brazil 2018. In 2021, the film earned second place in the Institutional Category in Samuday Ke Saath National Film Competition dedicated to indigenous filmmakers.

She was a fellow for Kathmandu Valley Urban History project of Nepal Picture Library where she traced the old water sources of the World Heritage Site - Boudha of Kathmandu, Nepal. She curated an online exhibition where 30 young girls from North East of India collected their river folklore with Living Water Museum titled 'Visualising Water Heritage of North East India through Storytelling.' She has collaborated with University of Toronto and Dr Jenny Bentley on curating a workshop where 30 Lepcha youths will be discovering their Sacred Lands and collecting stories from the region of Darjeeling and Sikkim. Currently, she is a PhD student with University of Manitoba, Canada.
