Julian Matthews

Who Looks After Water

Julian Matthews is an enrolled member of the Nez Perce tribe that has a Treaty with the US Government that encompasses areas within Oregon, Idaho, WA and Montana. Outside the Treaty we have the Usual and Accustomed rights where we traditionally hunted, fished and gathered outside of the Treaty of 1855. As a tribal member I believe in continuing to exercise our Treaty rights and ensure that those young people will be able to do the same. In efforts to protect our Treaty rights we  formed a non Profit, Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment to work on educating and motivating our Tribal youth and adults to understand and take action when efforts are made to take away or negatively impact our Treaty Rights. I feel that by education and activism along with other NGO"s and other Tribes and tribal members we can protect what we have for the future.

I served 6 years in the US Navy, graduated from Gonzaga University with a Business/Finance degree and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Idaho
